When I was planning my
Christmas home decoration this year, the process was a little different from the past few years. This reminds me of the question I recently encountered on Instagram about how to plan home decorations for Christmas. This led to this article!
How do I plan my Christmas home decoration:
Before I go into the details, please know that what I am sharing is not the rigid "rules" I follow every year, nor the way things always develop. Sometimes inspiration strikes in the middle of the season and makes me completely off course (for better or for worse!). However, in general, my planning process is like this.
My first thought was about color (and my tree).
When I do any design (nine out of ten), the first thing I think of is color. This is the case when I plan room designs, parties or desktop landscapes.
But when it comes to Christmas home decoration, the idea of colors and the idea of Christmas trees usually go hand in hand. This means that in the fall, I will try to be open to inspiration, which may help me come up with a color scheme. I know this sounds crazy, but I'm kind of talking about this topic.
I like the year Adele wore it in live performances, which inspired this golden and green tree. Last year, I found a green velvet chair in the living room, which inspired me to go green. This decision made me almost all red in the room at home.
Then, I will think about the subject.
Generally, I try not to be too "themed". But sometimes, loose "themes" can help the decorating process.
For example, this year I will bring red in the family room. I chose this color because I used it in this space last year, and I like its appearance, and hope to get something similar this year. However, I also want to change it a bit, so I use the theme of "England Hotel". I realize that this is meaningless to anyone, but when I think of "the cottage in the UK", I have a clear vision in my mind: the ski hut meets Cameron Diaz in the movie " Houses in England screened in "Vacation". Can you see it now?
Another example is my living room decoration last year. I thought of the theme of the Emerald City. When you look at that room, you don't think of the magical city of Oz, but this is what guided me to many decisions. I hope this makes sense.
Having a color scheme or theme can help me resist all the distractions I find when decorating. At this time of the year, there are too many temptations. If I want a cohesive appearance, I know that I cannot attract all of them to one place at once.
Yes, I sorted out my wrapping paper.
Another area of topical assistance is the choice of wrapping paper. I realize this makes me sound like a fool, but it is an agreement reached. I like wrapping paper. I like it very much, I want it all. With themes, I can concentrate on shopping when I go out. It also helps to create a coordinated look under the tree. This may not be important to everyone, but for someone like me, he has to take a lot of pictures of his home and want an area to be aesthetically pleasing, so it is important.
When I was in the apartment two years ago, I used dark turquoise, gray and white as the themes. Last Christmas, I mainly used plaid/tartan and buffalo plaid paper.
Yes, it's a bit weird, but it suits my feelings.
inventory.
With these three things, I counted what I had. I store the Christmas items in the tote bag in the attic. Before I start decorating, I put down my tote bag to see what I want to use. Since I am a blogger, I change the decoration every year, so I have a lot of decorations available. After taking inventory, I sorted out the things that were not needed or not used this year, and then donated or put them back in the attic. This saves me from being overwhelmed by everything.
As you can imagine, I like shopping as holiday decoration, so I also choose some of my favorite holiday decoration places.
Just started.
At this point, I always feel a little overwhelmed and a little crazy. When someone shows his decorations to the world through the Internet, I easily panic: "Will I miss this logo this year? What if my ideas are bad? What if my creativity is dried up? "
When I started to feel this way, my first rule was: "just start." I choose something I like, or know that it will be a "victory" for me, and start from there. This builds my confidence, and I will be up and running soon! I still have moments of doubt, but in general, it's good to start from there.
Another tip is to try something. When I decorated the kitchen, at first, I put Santa's cup series on the shelf in the dining room. They look good there. However, I decided to try them in the kitchen, that is when the magic happens. They look great there! So please try again until you like it!
